Spread in a Latin translation titled “Tacuinum Sanitatis”, the health tables of the Arab physician Ibn Butlan (d. 1064) were among the most widely read and highly appreciated texts of medieval Europe. The first German version was published in 1533. The reader is confronted with a wealth of cultural-historical facts, as the volume not only deals with meals and drugs but also with the seasons and the weather, clothing and the home, sports, music and dance, reproduction, sleepwalking etc., thus covering all areas of daily life, and it is surprising to see how these ancient views correspond with our modern thinking today.
