The historic centre of Graz was added to the UNESCO world cultural heritagelist in 1999 and has since joined the many other places in the world to receive special merit in view of this great honor – mainly given because of the old part of the city of Graz, which, over the centuries, have reflected the magnificent synthesis of art and architecture from german-speaking countries, the Balkans and the Mediterranen area.
The architectural and artistic significance of the historic centre of Graz derives mainly from the fact that it twice served as a residence capital and that the presence of the rulers and their entourages provided for an extraordinary cultural upswing in the town.
This book presents the city of Graz from different angles – as a historical art work and also a living modern city.
